Ursula Holden Gill is an award winning actress and story teller, who has worked alongside Opera North, The Northern Centre for Storytelling, Festival of the Edge, as well as Emmerdale and various other television programmes. Inspired by folk tales and music, morris dancing, Northern countryside and landmarks, she is a member of the British Society for Storytelling.

Andrew Macpherson is a storyteller and artist based in Leeds. Interested in photography around the North, and observation about student lifestyles around the Hyde Park area, he takes a keen interest in Haiku Poetry. Inspired by the combination of image and word, he is guaranteed to bring an authentic Northern spark to our exhibition!

We will be selling certain pieces of art work at A Northern Tail, so come along and if you see something you like, take it home with you! This will include drawings, photographs, paper cuttings- all totally original pieces! You may also be able to arrange personal commissioned work with the artists there, feel free to ask!

Philip Spellacy is a fine artist based in Yorkshire. He works to commission and exhibits world-wide

He's planning on coming along to the opening of our exhibition!

''I think you are all great for getting together for support and shared ventures. In my opinion one of the biggest problems in Britain for artists is how isolated they often are and as a result they are a powerless group. The world of the future will definitley be about working together whether it is to save the planet or promote art and artists. Of course these matters are linked and a 'political' dimension to art is also something that we in Britain could develop more. Have courage and faith, and expect nothing from the Arts Council. AN ORGANISATION DEDICATED TO HELPING, PROMOTING AND APPRECIATING FINE ART IN THE LEEDS AREA. I HAVE CONTACTED MEMBERS IN RELATION TO COMING ALONG TO SUPPORT US.

Various other Art 'clubs' have been contacted, including one in Guiseley and Farsley.

Also contacted: The organisers of exhibitions at the Merrion Art Market in Leeds, Leeds College of Art and Design and the art department at Leeds Metropolitan University.

More to be contacted in the next few days. Still waiting to hear back from dozens of other artists that have been contacted!
Maybe once we get together about four or five we can try and advertise the exhibition by stating which dates they are all planning to come along? May help attract a lot of visitors!

Pavilion, Leeds

I'm doing some volunteer work for a new exhibition at the Pavilion Gallery in Leeds this week.

I'll ask any of the artists I work alongside if they'd be interested in coming along to our exhibition. Also, if we have any posters or flyers ready I'll ask if I can put a load up!

Nicola Pemberton, an artist that has worked alongside us in various reading week activities during our studies in Leeds, also hopes to come along to the exhibition. However, she is expecting a baby around a similar time so nothing is definite.

She sent us her best wishes and said she's send along some written feedback if she is able to attend!

When I worked alongside her, her work was concerned with the relationship between motion and practical artwork.

Victoria Horkan is a local artist with an impressive profile in the arts industry. Interested in the potential use of unusual materials, her work expresses energy and honesty, described as being 'clever yet unintentional.' What may seem 'accidental' in terms of texture, she uses as a focal point for her next project.

Victoria is coming along to the 'Skipping with Bacon' exhibition to show her support!

Although we are yet to agree on a definite date and time, she gave us some much appreciated advice for working in such a competitive industry:

Despite considering Pavillion, North Bar, Salvo's, Nation of Shopkeepers, The Oracle, Adelphi Pub, Corn Exchange, Project Space and Smokestack, we decided that LS6 Gallery fulfills our ideal criteria for a venue space:

- student friendly (somewhere our target audience (our peers and the art and design community will feel comfortable)
- welcoming (a relaxed environment which enables the local community to fully engage with our artwork)
- local (our target audience generally resides in headingley and hyde park, thus maximising the turnout)
- functional (the space is suitable for an openings night, workshop evenings and has a bar downstairs which will be serving drinks)
- space (will comfortably exhibit the work of six artists, including floor space for installations and a guest book)

We would like to make an impact on the community of Leeds, exhibiting a variety of mediums and forms related to our chosen theme - the North and the influence it has had on us as artists. We are aiming for the exhibition to be interactive, in order to involve our audience and emphasize their participation as part of a community. We will be running up to five workshops during the two week period, bringing locals together who are interested in the art of MAKING and its results. This will be mode for constructive criticism and honest responses to our individual work. We are currently working on various forms of promotion to enable us to get our work 'out there' to the Leeds-based area and beyond.
